Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the SCA?
The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international organization
dedicated to researching and re-creating pre-17th-century European history. It’s
kind of "full-contact Ren Fair with better garb and fewer pirates".
For some, the SCA is "living history", that is to say: they go to
great lengths to research and detail the period of history they are portraying. They work very hard at events to be as accurate as possible in what
they wear, the food they eat and the tent they sleep in. For others, the SCA is
a great party in cool costumes. Most of us are somewhere between the two. In
short, the SCA can be all things to all people. It is what you make it.

- What is an "Anachronism"?
- I want to go to an event, what do I do?
First, find out what events are happening this year and where with the Kingdom Event Calendar. I also recommend reading our Newcomer's Page for advice (what to wear, what to do, etc).
- How involved do I have to be in this?
How involved do you want to be? The choice is yours. No pressure dude. If you want to be REALLY involved there's enough to keep you very busy, or you're welcome to be a part of the scenery.
- What is a "Persona"?
A persona is an adopted
personality. Your persona is the person that you are representing who lived
before the year 1600 (most people in the SCA focus on 600 A.D. to 1600 A.D.,
although some people decide to go earlier). If you're not sure what period of
history you like, don't feel pressured to pick a time and place right away.
Take your time and find what strikes your fancy.
My school/organization/library/etc would like some of you to come and do
an SCA demonstration for us.
What do we do?
You'll need to find your local group and contact their Seneschal (president),
Chatelaine (newcomer office), and/or Marshal (person in charge of fighting) and
ask them if they can put something together for you. Demos are contingent on
the availability of SCA members who are able to volunteer their time.
To find your local group, go to the Kingdom's Group Lookup page and keep following the links to find your local SCA group.
